Our Psychologists have availability for face-to-face and online appointments for adults, adolescents and children.
At MindBox Psychology, we understand that for many Christians, faith plays an essential role in their mental health journey. Some of our Clinical Psychologists who are Christians incorporate this perspective into therapy. We provide evidence-based treatment while respecting and acknowledging the role of faith in mental health. If you prefer to work with a psychologist who shares your Christian faith, let us know when booking, and we will do our best to match you with the right clinician.
The relationship between Christianity and psychology has been a topic of much discussion. Historically, psychology emerged from philosophy and theology, but as it became more scientific, tensions arose between religious beliefs and psychological methods. Some argue that Christianity and psychology are in direct conflict, while others believe any perceived tension is more about misunderstanding than actual incompatibility.
One key source of conflict is authority—religion relies on divine revelation, while psychology and science depend on empirical evidence. Some believe psychology should steer clear of religious matters, while others see religion as an essential part of human experience that psychology should acknowledge. Christian psychologists, in particular, may struggle with value conflicts, such as facing opposition from religious communities or navigating secular training environments that don’t accommodate faith-based perspectives.
However, many researchers suggest that psychology and Christianity can coexist, provided both are handled with an open mind. Some Christian psychologists use their faith as a lens through which they interpret psychological findings, while others keep their faith separate from their scientific work. Psychology has also moved away from its early focus on concepts like the soul and now concentrates on behaviour and mental processes. This shift has led to psychology being viewed as ‘secular’—but that doesn’t mean it can’t interact with religious belief in meaningful ways.
Ultimately, the tension between Christianity and psychology isn’t black and white. While there are disagreements, psychology and faith can inform each other, especially when approached with respect, curiosity, and a commitment to high-quality research.
