At MindBox Psychology, we use Emotion Coaching to help children and adolescents manage their emotions and behaviours. Based on Dr. John Gottman’s work (Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child), this approach teaches kids to recognise, understand, and regulate their emotions. We also use evidence-based programs like Tuning in to Kids and Tuning in to Teens to support parents in guiding their children through emotional experiences. Many of our clinicians are trained in these techniques to help with anxiety, behavioural challenges, and emotional regulation.

Emotion Coaching: Supporting Emotional Regulation and Resilience

Emotion Coaching helps children and teenagers develop emotional intelligence and self-regulation skills. By validating their emotions while setting boundaries, it promotes resilience and reduces emotional outbursts. Research shows that children who receive Emotion Coaching have better social skills, lower anxiety and depression, and improved behaviour at home and school. This approach is especially useful for children who struggle with emotional regulation due to psychological conditions.

Our Psychologists integrate Emotion Coaching into therapy for children and adolescents dealing with anxiety, depression, behavioural problems, tantrums, ADHD, ODD, ASD, attachment issues, and conduct disorder. This approach is flexible and can be used in therapy and daily interactions. Our psychologists provide direct Emotion Coaching for children and training sessions for parents to apply these techniques at home.

A bit about the treatment

What does the research say about Emotion Coaching?

Studies show Emotion Coaching helps children build emotional intelligence, leading to lower stress, stronger relationships, and better academic performance. Programs like Tuning in to Kids and Tuning in to Teens improve parent-child communication and reduce emotional and behavioural issues.

What is Emotion Coaching?

Emotion Coaching is a structured approach that helps children and adolescents understand and manage their emotions in a healthy way. It involves recognising and validating a child’s feelings, teaching them to label their emotions, and guiding them through problem-solving and self-regulation. Instead of dismissing or punishing emotional outbursts, Emotion Coaching encourages children to develop emotional awareness and coping strategies, leading to long-term improvements in behaviour and mental well-being. This approach is particularly beneficial for children with anxiety, ADHD, ASD, behavioural issues, and other emotional regulation challenges, as it fosters resilience, improves relationships, and promotes overall emotional intelligence.

How long does Emotion Coaching Typically Take?

Emotion Coaching is an ongoing process integrated into therapy and parenting strategies. Children often show improvements within 6-12 sessions, but long-term benefits come from continued practice at home and school. Parent training can be done over structured sessions to equip caregivers with the necessary tools.
