Exam Stress / Study Skills

Exam stress in children is that overwhelmed, anxious feeling many kids get around tests. It often comes from pressure to perform, fear of failure, or not knowing how to study effectively. This stress can lead to sleep problems, mood swings, tummy aches, or avoiding schoolwork.

Study skills are the tools children use to learn and organise information. When these skills are underdeveloped, exams can feel much harder. Treatment for exam stress / study skills in children focuses on creating helpful routines, teaching relaxation strategies, and finding study methods that match each child’s learning style. With support, exams can feel more manageable and far less intimidating.

Common Signs of Exam Stress in Children

If these signs are ongoing or worsening, it may be time to explore treatment for exam stress / study skills in children. A psychologist can help reduce pressure, build confidence, and teach coping tools that make studying easier.

What the research says about exam stress / study skills in children

When it comes to supporting anxious students, it’s useful to understand what actually works. A 2024 international review in Child Psychiatry & Human Development examined how schools worldwide manage exam stress and improve study habits. The researchers analysed 31 programs designed to reduce academic pressure and strengthen study skills in children and teens.

Exam Stress Affects More Than Just Grades

This review confirmed what parents and teachers often notice—academic stress doesn’t just impact results. It also affects sleep, motivation, and emotional wellbeing. In some cases, ongoing stress can contribute to anxiety or depression. That’s why early treatment for exam stress / study skills in children is important. It not only supports learning but also protects mental health.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Is Most Effective

Across multiple studies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) stood out as the most effective treatment for exam stress / study skills in children. CBT helps kids recognise unhelpful thoughts such as “I’ll never do well” and replace them with realistic, balanced ones. It also teaches valuable tools like deep breathing, time management, and problem-solving—skills that reduce stress during study and exam periods.

Targeted Support Works Best

While general school programs can help, targeted interventions for students already struggling show stronger results. Tailored support, especially from psychologists, makes a significant difference in managing anxiety. This finding highlights that personalised treatment for exam stress / study skills in children is often more effective than broad classroom approaches.

The Role of Trained Professionals

The review also found that programs run by trained mental health professionals achieved better outcomes than those led solely by teachers. While educators play an important role, psychologist-led interventions tend to offer more reliable and lasting results—especially for children dealing with high stress or anxiety.

More Research Is Still Needed

Although CBT is currently the best-supported treatment for exam stress / study skills in children, researchers noted that many studies had small sample sizes or short follow-ups. This means more long-term research is needed to strengthen the evidence base. Even so, the findings clearly show that structured, therapy-based programs are effective.

What This Means for Parents and Schools

If your child feels anxious about exams or struggles to study effectively, there are proven strategies that can help. Structured programs using CBT—particularly those led by registered psychologists—can build confidence, focus, and resilience.
