Functional Neurological Disorder was previously called ‘Conversion disorder’ and ‘Somatisation Disorder’. Children suffering from this condition experience neurological symptoms without an identifiable organic cause. It is thought to arise in response to chronic stressors (both physical, such as illness and psychological such as the loss of a parent) but may occur as a result of long-standing difficulties in managing stress and the ability to identify and regulate various emotions. Some physical symptoms caused by functional neurological disorder include blindness, partial or total paralysis (e.g., inability to walk or move a limb), inability to speak, headaches, non-epileptic seizures (pseudo seizures), tics, dizziness and balance problems.
